It’s #WhiskyWednesday again, folks - what’s not to celebrate?! 🥳 In our glass this week, there is a new version of this just out but it’s yet to get to us, it’s Fettercairn Warehouse 2, Batch 1. We love a lighter dram now and again, and Fettercairn is a perfect distillery for this. Most importantly, the stills are also uniquely fitted with irrigators - literally rings of metal that run cold water down the sides of the copper like waterfalls, therefore cooling the vapour as it reaches the top to increase reflux, further distillation, and really pull through those lighter tones. The Warehouse 2 series is exciting for using a variety of different wood types in each batch, with Batch 1 containing a mix of European and American oak from port pipes, 2 different types of sherry, a little virgin Spanish oak, and of course a light core of bourbon to keep things fresh. 👌
The palate is light, but initially richer than on most Fettercairns - something very slightly chocolatey as well as some chewy fruits - with an interestingly tingling core of spice on the centre of the tongue. There are some light tropical fruits as well as pear around the edges of the palate, with that richer fruit centre very much coming from the port and sherry to provide a juicier core. There are also slight piny notes alongside the spice, which provide a nice sharpness, but also lightness and freshness to the dram. There is a little bit of malt and pear drops, coming in below rich, thick tannins that bring in a grape-y sherry note - we are talking actual oloroso sherry, not just the usual effects of a sherry cask on whisky - which is really different and tasty. The freshness is still there, however, making this a really balanced, tasty and intriguing dram. The finish is long and slightly drying, mainly characterised by those chewy almost plum fruits and that richness of the sherry. Delicious. We look forward to seeing what else comes from the Warehouse 2 series, and especially getting stuck into the newly released Batch 3 soon! Slàinte mhòr! 🥃🏴
